Millstone, Nether Alderley Old Mill in 1974.

Description

Millstone, Nether Alderley Old Mill in 1974. A water powered flour mill . The millstone is a sandstone runner stone that rotates on the fixed bed stone. The cuts in the stone move the ground flour to the outside. The metal core, the iron rind, allowed the stone to be turned while grain ran down to be ground between the runner and bed stone.

First recorded in 1391, a stone built watermill was erected at the site between 1595-7. Improved in the 18th and 19th centuries it finally closed in 1939. It was presented to the National Trust in 1950 who restored it to working order between 1967 and 1970. Historical photograph was taken in 1974 for a Readers Digest publication.
