Unicorn Inn sign with sundial in 1974 on an ex-pub, Uppingham

Description

Unicorn Inn sign with sundial in 1974 on an ex-pub, Uppingham Rutland UK.

This is beautifully carved pub sign of a Unicorn on a 17c building with an 18c front which is Grade II listed. The Unicorn inn was recorded in 1802 but I have not found the date it closed although I think it may not have been a pub in 1974. The heraldic position is described as sejant erect - seated upright with forelegs raised. The unicorn is a symbol of purity and virtue. Today the Unicorn sign and sundial are painted white. It is a great pity that more care was not applied to this historic sign. Signs like this were even more important when reading was not universal. This is part of a collection of photographs taken in 1974 for a Readers Digest book. Some are of objects and buildings that have changed or are now no longer in the same location. Some are taken in locations that have changed considerably over the past nearly 50 years.
