Tomb in Tolland Royal Church in 1974 with a carved stone effigy of a 14th century knight.

Description

Tomb in Tolland Royal Church in 1974 with a carved stone effigy of a 14th century knight, Photographed in 1974.

The tomb dates from the similar period to the church itself. He lies, recumbent, on a tomb chest or altar tomb. He is dressed in mail or chainmail with his helmet, sword, shield and breastplate. He was once thought to have been a crusader but historians now think that was unlikely.

This is part of a collection of photographs taken in 1974 for a Readers Digest book. Some are of objects and buildings that have changed or are now no longer in the same location. Some are taken in locations that have changed considerably over the past nearly 50 years.
