Pargetting on the former Sun Inn, Saffron Walden.

Description

The former Sun Inn, Church Street displays some of the best examples of this type of plasterwork. It is 14th-c timber-framed dwelling that was once used as Cromwell's HQ during the English Civil War. Pargetting is an elaborate plasterwork decoration and this example illustrates the legendary fight between Tom Hickathrift and the Wisbech Giant. It decorates the gable of a gateway. One of a collection of historical photographs was taken in 1974 for a Readers Digest publication.
