Trunk of the Paperbark Maple.

Description

The bark flakes and peels to reveal a variety of colours. Tree bark has areas of thin walled cells called pores that allow the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. There are various possible reasons why flaking occurs in some species but regularly removing dead cells may improve gas exchange and consequently growth.
